5 Ways to Create a Non-Toxic Home
The clean movement has hit the nation and more people are leaning toward a green, sustainable, and non-toxic lifestyle. The non-toxic movement has been around for a long time, but we're seeing it now, more than ever before. We've talked, in the past, about how to live a non-toxic life, but today, we want to delve a little bit deeper, so for Toxic Tuesday, we're talking about 5 Ways to Create a Non-Toxic Home.
1. Switch out your Tupperware.
This is a simple, yet effective way to get your feet wet while switching to non-toxic. Plastic food storage is filled with chemicals that can be harmful to you if you heat food in it or place hot food inside - the heat will allow the chemicals to absorb into your food; no bueno. We recommend using glass containers to reduce your exposure to toxic chemicals and if you need to use plastic, only use it when you have cold food or already cooled food.
2. Clean, baby, clean!
Be aware of taking your shoes on and off while in the house - it's recommended to take off your shoes as soon as you walk through the front door to eliminate any kind of outside toxins entering your living space. You should also be cleaning regularly to help get rid of allergens and dust particles that build up in your home.
3. Switch out your beauty and skin products
It might seem weird, but switching out your beauty and skin care will help you get into the mindset of keeping a non-toxic home. All of the Products that you use emit chemicals into the air of your home, so switching out the things that you use regularly will help you to keep a non-toxic house.
4. Avoid Teflon at all costs
Non-stick Teflon contain PFCs. When these pans get scratched, the chemicals are released and absorbed into our food. We recommend baking with oven safe glass and to cook with cast iron or stainless steel. Trust us, your body will thank you!
5. Replace your candles
Candles and other air purifiers are some of the most toxic items found in the home - recent research points to candles producing toxins equal to someone smoking one cigarette! Gross! Choose a natural option like essential oil diffusers or a soy candle. These options are great because they not only smell great, but they're a lot safer and healthier for you, and you home.
